Actuellement, il existe encore une aviculture traditionnelle, ou aviculture fermière, même si l'on achète les poussins à l'âge de 1 jour et si l'on utilise des aliments du commerce pour les premières phases de leur vie. Généralement, ces oiseaux sont élevés avec une alimentation fournie par les produits de la ferme et dans des locaux qui ne sont pas spécialement adaptés. L'aviculture traditionnelle procure ainsi directement à la ferme des œufs et des poulets.
